Research for a Quieter Europe
CALM Press Release, Sep. 23, 2002
New brochure on future European noise research to create a quieter and more livable environment is published now.
One year ago, the European Commission has initiated the creation of CALM, a network acting for three years, which is charged with developing the Community Noise Research Strategy Plan. This plan will define the strategic directions for future noise research activities which are required to promote EU-wide noise reduction with the aim of improving the quality of life in Europe within the next twenty years.
Now the CALM network has issued a first brochure as a contribution to the next research initiative of the European Commission which will start at the end of 2002. This brochure clearly sets the short and long-term research priorities for environmental noise reduction. It shows where noise reduction potentials exist and where research is most urgently needed in order to achieve the ambitious goals of EU noise policy. The vision for the future noise policy is described and the strategy for noise research is outlined. The brochure gives also a brief survey on the situation of environmental noise in Europe and the current noise legislation with its related directives, in particular the new Directive on the Assessment and Management of Environmental Noise which was approved in May 2002.
Further brochures will be issued by the CALM network as the project progresses and new research findings become available.
The new brochure called strategy paper "Research for a Quieter Europe" with the number EUR 20435 is available at the European Commission / DG Research.
