  General Information

There is an urgent need to develop entirely novel means of further reducing noise emissions from jet aircraft. Strong motives lie behind this need:

  • To reach a significant improvement in the airport noise situation, including aspects that, going beyond the successful application of novel noise reduction technology, could also be used to address the social dimension of the problem.
  • To achieve sustained commercial competitiveness of the European industry.
Taking the opportunity of the Aeronautics Task Force (ATF) set up in 1995 by the European Commission, the European industry has proposed, under the larger label of The Environmentally Friendly Aircraft (TEFA), an Aircraft Exterior Noise research action plan. In particular, the TEFA report to the ATF did provide needs and directions for a very significant technology programme aimed at reducing noise around airports by at least 5 dB.
